Racing
PEYC runs handicap dinghy racing and uses the average lap system. This means faster boats may complete more laps than slower boats but the results are worked out on the average lap time. In this way everyone gets to race for a similar time, the faster handicap boats don't have to wait for the slow to do that last lap and the slower handicap boats don't slog around an extra lap. Our rolling handicap system adjusts every boat's handicap after each race to bring corrected times closer together and make racing more competitive for sailors of all abilities.
Any class of dinghy is welcome, popular classes at present include the Supernova and the Aero.
Thursdays
Thursday evening racing is held throughout summer when the tide allows. The start line is from the race box at the end of the pier at 7:00. Racers should sign in at the clubhouse before going on the water. Typically a race finishes around 8PM.
In mid June, we run a sternchase on a Thursday evening, Here we all start at different times according to handicap and the winner is whoever is ahead on the water at finish time 8:30.
Saturdays
Weekend races are held on Saturdays apart from the last race of the season when we join the yacht racers for the end of season Christmas party.
Normally we aim for a 13:00 start and have 3 races each afternoon with a target finish time of around 15:30. On some days low tides mean we delay to 14:00, but still aim to finish around 15:30 after 2 races.
Most races start from the racebox at the end of the pier and over 3 or 4 weekends we form a series of 9 to 12 races. We have 7 such series spread over the year. On 6 occasions we will run a one day trophy series with courses in Queensferry Bay and a committee boat start.
Dates and times of races and fun sails are in the Dinghy Calendar. Sailing instructions are in the Racing Organisation section and courses are found in the Courses section The loan boats may be booked for all races.
