Keel Boat Skills Course

PEYC Practical Training

The aim is to develop and practice your sailing skills over a block of six enjoyable sessions with fellow club members.

This instructor led course supporting progression from the RYA Keelboat level 2 curriculum will cover the 5 essentials and much more, each week building on the previous week's learning. The sessions will commence with theory instruction in the clubhouse, practical sessions in the boats, followed by a de-brief in the clubhouse. There will be sundry hints and tips each week.

The course is limited to a maximum of 8 students utilising the clubs two 707s and this training will support becoming an accredited PEYC helm.  Please note you should have a minimum of RYA level 2 certificate and be able sail a triangular course competently to be able to join this course.

In addition to the reinforcing the five essentials the sessions will cover:

  • Pontoon berthing, engine control, mooring, motoring, coming alongside.
  • Rigging to suit conditions, sail setting on all points of sailing.
  • Planning and sailing best course to destination and home.
  • Balance, trim, boat control, man overboard, emergencies.
  • Skippers role, managing the boat crew with clear communication.
  • Racing basics, work out the course, starting, course made good.
  • Incidental hints and tips, on cleats, rope coiling, knots, etc.
