Winter Talks #1. Dolphins on the Forth and Social Sailing at PEYC
Marine Mammals of the Forth
Tierney Carter
Tierney is a Senior Marine Mammal Consultant with over five years experience of preparing impact assessments, together with visually and acoustically monitoring, and mitigating effects of anthropogenic noise on marine mammals. After the level of interest in the bottlenose dolphin that has hung around PEYC this year, Tierney has been asked to present a talk about marine mammals in the Firth of Forth. She will present common species that can be viewed in the Forth and where/when is the best place to get a sighting. She will introduce how to identify marine mammals to species level and present audio of species vocalisations.
Although the Forth is home to a variety of marine mammals, they are vulnerable to disturbance, in particular underwater noise and vessel presence. This talk will also introduce how vessel operators can reduce any negative impacts to marine mammals whilst out on or near the water.
Social Sailing on the Forth
Linda Cooper
We are fortunate at PEYC that we have a great combination of all the ingredients for some superb social sailing. We have yachts, owned and managed by both the club and by members; we have interesting cruising waters with plenty of destination harbours, admittedly some more accessible than others; we have a vast amount of experience in the club of sailing around the Forth; and we now have around 150 members with cruising membership.
The mentored sessions on Eurobo, as well as the club 707s and dinghies, have extended the clubs activities into a whole new regime of access to sailing for members and this can only grow at PEYC.
Our Commodore, Linda Cooper, will open up a general discussion about the opportunities for social sailing based at Port Edgar to offer more to the clubs members.
Your contributions will be invaluable and we hope to see lots of people there to guide us as we plan for 2025.
Attendance is free, the bar will be open and visitors are welcome, bring a friend. Booking is helpful so we know numbers but is not essential.
