Sunday Morning Race Practice and Mentoring
PEYC has a strong yacht racing pedigree. We are committed to introducing crew and new skippers to yacht racing and helping them build experience and develop their skills. Sunday sailing and racing is the cornerstone of that effort. In the morning we encourage skippers and crew keen to hone their skills to practice and in the afternoon we have a race.
If you have limited sailing experience then build your sailing experience first through our mentored sessions on Eurobo and our 707s. Book Here to gain more experience. The mentors can sponsor you to join race training practice when they feel you are ready.
If you have little or no experience racing but a fair amount of sailing experience and are keen to explore racing then join a mentored session above first and tell the mentor before the session that you would like to be assessed to join yacht race practice on Sundays.
In order to be able to book a Sunday mentored race practice session you need to be accredited for yacht race practice. You can gain this accreditation by being sponsored by 707 or Eurobo mentors or PEYC race skippers. You must have two sponsors. If you have previous racing experience this accreditation may be awarded before sailing at the club. In any event please email peyc.racing@gmail.com naming your two sponsors. This accreditation also entitles you to join mix and match, our service to help crew find racing yachts to sail on.
The club uses the two club 707s and Eurobo a 32ft cruiser/racer to run mentored sessions for crew to learn how to race a yacht. Our two 707s and Eurobo take up to 4 crew each with a mentor on the 707 and three mentors on Eurobo. Some other skippers of 707s join in and have space on their boats too.
The key roles on board include bow, pit, 2 trimmers and helm. In addition, on Eurobo we would have some one helping bow at the mast and a dedicated mainsheet trimmer.
Typically on Sunday mornings we will focus on key boat manoeuvres such as starting, tacking, gybing and mark rounding as well as sail trim and hoisting and dropping spinnakers. At another level, boat on boat tactics and race strategy will also be covered for those that are keen to extend their skills and knowledge.
Those that sign up for Sunday morning race practice will be given priority in finding a boat for the Sunday afternoon race using our mix and match service. It is our aim to have all three club boats racing in the afternoon The club boats may be used in the afternoon as additional mentored sessions or hire sessions for accredited helms.
More specifically, those that sign up for Eurobo race practice would be guaranteed a place on the afternoon race if they wish. Those that sign up for 707 race practice will be given priority for mix and match so we would hope to be able to get everyone out on the water in the afternoon too.
