The Greek Odyssey: PEYC in the Med. #1

The Assignment - To deliver a flotilla fleet based in Corfu to Piraeus, Athens for over-wintering. 5 out of 11 boats have skipper and crew from Port Edgar Yacht Club sailing from the end of October to early November.
Some of us arrived a day or two early and wondered around beautiful Corfu town before boarding the yachts in Gouvia Marina on Saturday, Day Zero, to check the boats inventory, and sign on the dotted line below many pages of documents all in Greek. Eeek! We sampled the fabulous Italian restaurant food next to our Airbnb at the marina and then met at the Marina Taverna that evening for some beers and the first information briefing from our leader, Blair Scott of XP at Sea Sailing, before being told to go and get hammered!

Sunday, Day 1: We set out for Gouvia, Paxos in a drizzle of rain with the sea and mountains shrouded in thick low black clouds. Those training days of blind Nav suddenly made sense as Maggie plotted our way down the east coast of Corfu, or so the chart informed us. Soon the only visible sight before us were huge flashes of horizontal and forked lightening, and an enormous scary water spout. We thought that only occurred in the movies. The shroud lifted to reveal Paxos as we made our way to the town marina. Bob Dick turned up at the Taverna looking like an over-ripe tomato as he hadn’t realised you could get sunburnt in a thunderstorm.

Monday, Day 2: Pink morning broke, but no blackbirds spoke, tho’ many cockerels crowed. And they had a lot to crow about, as the vista was stupendous. We slipped lines early as we had a long way to go to Levkas canal for the 4pm bridge opening and we mainly motor-sailed in the sunshine. One boat decided to try something different (now who would that be?!) and stopped off at Anti-Paxos for a wee swim in the sparkling turquoise bay. It was chaos berthing in busy Levkas marina, but we all helped each other to stern-to safely.
Tuesday Day 3: What day is it? Does it matter? We are all free to roam the Northern Ionian waters, which is stunningly beautiful. We motorsailed till the wind funnelled through the islands, and gusted 32 knots as we entered the mouth of the Syvota bay. Geneva crew need some spinach tonight, preferably in a filo pie. Some parked up in Spartakhori for the day for a swim in the bay.
