Ian Cameron Memorial Cruise

The club held a "cruise in company" with a difference on Sunday 21st September 2025. Instead of a flotilla of club boats heading out for a lunch stop at another harbour on the Firth of Forth, this time they headed out to sail around a buoy.
The buoy in question is a yellow special mark a few hundred yards downstream of Kincardine Bridge, and the aim of the cruise was to go around it. This was in memory of our friend and clubmate Ian Cameron, who sadly passed away in May after a short illness.
Ian had been the popular co-ordinator of our Thursday evening cruises for a number of years, and recently the recipient of a special award for exceptional service to the club. He never liked to head for home when he was out sailing until he had gone around something first, whether it be an island, a rock, a buoy, a moored boat or some other convenient object.
So about 12 yachts and probably more than 40 crew, including two visitors from Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club in New Zealand, set out shortly before midday on a strong incoming tide. This meant that although the wind was from a north-westerly quarter, requiring us to tack a few times on the way up-river, progress was good, and the quicker boats made the 11.5 nautical mile straight-line passage to the buoy in less than three hours. At least seven boats are believed to have made it around the buoy.
Then, after a period of faffing about, the wind most considerately veered into the north, and we enjoyed a brisk reach home on the now-outgoing tide. We even got to enjoy our lunches in a burst of warm sunshine!
Participating boats included Fingal, Kittiwake, Eurobo, Hardslog, Catkin, Apollo, Electra, Damaris, Vela, Debaser, Sula and Synchro.
